Martin Kirkman

Martin graduated from Ilkley College (Bradford University) in 1984 with a degree in Recreation Management specialising in Outdoor Pursuits. After this he worked at the National Cave Training Centre in Dent (Yorkshire Dales). Here he was responsible for leading and supporting caving trips in Britain and in France.

After Dent, Martin moved to Aberdovey to work for the Outward Bound Trust. Here he developed his leadership skills in mountaineering, sailing and canoeing and achieved his Summer and Winter Mountain Leader Awards and RYA Day Skippers Sailing Certificate. Martin also holds his RYA Dinghy Instructors Certificate.

Martin became Senior Instructor at Aberdovey and had responsibility for the day to day running of the centre, programming and also managing the wharf water base.

Martin ran Outward Bound Courses for teenagers and adults as well as management courses for large national companies. He also planned and led annual staff training weeks for Outward Bound in Scotland and the Lake District.

Martin worked in Scotland for Outward Bound Loch Eil in the winter months delivering Mountain Leader Training courses and winter skills courses.

Following his work at Outward Bound Martin completed his PGCE at Didsbury in Manchester and began his career in teaching in Warrington. He then moved to become Deputy Headteacher in Wrexham and finally Headteacher in Ellesmere Port. Throughout his career he has had a firm commitment to education outside the classroom and has developed a range of outdoor and residential learning programmes for the children he has worked with.

Martin is currently working for Conway Centres and has been responsible for the development of a new outdoor learning facility at Conway Centres: Burwardsley. Here he has introduced staff and pupils to the reconstructed archaeological dig site and Roundhouse which have been created at Burwardsley with the support of the Habitats and Hill Forts organisation.

Martin enjoys opportunities to enjoy the outdoor environment himself spending his summer holidays in the Alps and weekends on the British fells and hillsides, he is a member of an active mountaineering club and also the Fell Runners Association.
