Via Ferrata (Latin for "Iron Way")

Conway Centres: Anglesey now has one of only a few Via Ferratas in the whole country. It will require all the skills of managing your own safety whilst undertaking an  exhilarating climbing traverse with space below your feet.  You will do this by using a set of ‘cows tails’ (special bits of ropes that you control) to attach yourself to steel cables.  You will follow these gaining height slowly using ledges on the limestone cliff to balance along.

When the climbing gets too difficult iron steps are glued into the rock to either hold on to or stand on.  Steel cables span out to trees and you will need to balance along these Tyrolean bridges before returning back to the cliff face.  If you slip your ‘cow’s tails’ will hold you up.

The combination of adventure, excitement and managing your own safety (with a friendly teacher from Conway Centres: Anglesey overseeing), make this a very popular activity.  Your comfort with heights will grow as you overcome your fears and ‘Key Skills’ of communicating, independence and managing risk will all be developed.  You will also get some great exercise as you walk  the 15 minutes along the side of the Menai Strait to reach the Via Ferrata and for those with a keen eye you might even see the rare Red Squirrels.
