Geography at GCSE

The fieldwork will include problem identification techniques, data collection, the formation of basic hypotheses, as well as some statistical analysis and the presentation of data. The fieldwork will be useful for improving geographical understanding and developing a pupils field studies techniques.

Coastal Studies

Sea Cliff Erosion.  Investigating how the sea erodes, field sketching, identification of features.

Beach Processes.  Measuring beach profiles, pebble size analysis, investigation of coastal defences.

Management of a Coastal Nature Reserve.  Management strategies to resolve conflict between the conservation of public areas.

Follow Up.  Drawing beach and dune profiles, diagrammatic presentation of pebble and vegetation data and hypothesis testing.

Glaciation

Glacial Geomorphology.  Glacial erosion features, effects of Geology on landscape, and sediments glacial deposits and till fabric analysis.

Cirque Analysis.  Study of the spatial distribution of Cirques in North Wales; involving an in depth study of  either 2 or 3 cirques.

Follow Up.  Graphical representation of results and hypothesis testing, coupled with oral and visual presentation of findings.

Woodlands and Soils

Woodland Ecosystems.  Study of three contrasting woodland areas, identifying vegetation cover and invertebrate fauna. Measuring soil profiles and soil pH, light intensity and tree density.

Woodland Management.  Management and land use in woodlands and commercial forestry.

Follow Up. Oral and visual presentation of findings combined with graphical representation of results and hypothesis testing.

River Studies

River Processes. Study the processes acting on a river catchment; how a river erodes, field sketching, identification of features.

Channel Characteristics.  Measurement of channel (depth, width, velocity, bedload size, shape and gradient at a minimum of three different sites.

Features of an Upland Valley.  Gorge characteristics, agriculture and glacial scenery.

Follow Up.  Diagrammatic presentation of results, statistical analysis of pebble data, hypothesis testing.

Urban Studies

Urban/Rural Fringe.  Land use mapping and environmental quality assessments on transect into Caernarfon.

CBD Studies.  Land use mapping, shopping & environmental quality , pedestrian counts, impact of tourism on development of Caernarfon.

Impact of retail development.  Study of sphere of influence of new ‘out of town’ retail development to compare with older retail outlets. Bangor. Caernarfon. Llangefni?

Follow Up.  Plotting maps of land use on transects and CBD maps, environmental and pedestrian count isoline maps.

Rural Studies

Rural Settlement.  Study of the function, site, situation, type and transport links of a number of contrasting villages

Follow Up.  Location Coefficient, Centrality Values, Functional Index to obtain rank order of settlements. Nearest Neighbour Analysis and Spearman Rank Correlation.

Tourism

Impact of Tourism on National Parks.  Study of footpath erosion and tourist provision in the Snowdonia National Park. Cwm Idwal.

Tourist Honeypot.  Methods of managing visitors in a popular location. Llanberis. Betws y Coed.

Tourist Developments.  The use of industrial locations to provide tourist attractions.

Visitor Pressure.  Impact of tourism on a fragile ecosystem. Management strategies to minimise damage.

Impact of Tourism on Towns.  Contrasting two tourist resorts for environmental quality and functions.

Follow Up.  Oral presentations, diagrammatic presentation of results, statistical analysis and hypothesis testing.

Environmental Impact

Development of Major Project.  Hypothetical extension to the Cwm Dyli HEP scheme or Local Windfarm. Identification of environmental impact including derelict quarry site.

Energy.  A study of the differing forms of Energy production in the area and assessing their impact

Follow Up.  Oral & other presentations, role play with groups representing interested parties.
